I replied, “Let me know, when you have a report from Shorty.”

Saucy said, “Yes, Boss.”

I went back to the office. Nikki handed me my comm, and said, “There you are. I wondered where you got to.”

I replied, “You looked like you might be busy for a while. I thought I would get out of your way. Did you get Lyla squared away?”

“If you mean did I make her happy, with the kind of story she wanted, no, I don’t think so. I did give her everything I thought I could, without stirring up things in the Commonwealth.”

“That’s all we can do, at this point. Wanna see if we can actually get in a game of pool?”

“That sounds good, Caveman. You sank one, even with your comm ringing. Still your shot.”

I looked the table over. I hadn’t given myself anything like the shot I was trying for, but there was another opportunity I might be able to do something with. I sank one, but I wasn’t able to draw the cue back to where I needed it for the next shot. My next try was a miss, and Nikki ran the table. She asked, “Should I go back to bot rules, Hon?”

“Doesn’t matter to me. I’m going to get smoked, either way. Might as well stand on my hind legs, and take it.”

“You don’t care how badly I beat you?”

“We’re just killing time, anyway, aren’t we? I’m getting some practice in, sooner or later, it should start helping, I would think.”

“I think it is. That shot you had lined up before Lyla called would have worked, I’m pretty sure. You jumped just enough to mess up the English.”

“Live and learn, or you don’t live long.”

We shot some more, and I managed to chill enough to make some good shots. It didn’t seem like long at all, before Jeeves said, “Hey, Boss, it’s getting to be suppertime.”

I replied, “Thanks, Jeeves.”

Nikki said, “Where does the time go?”

“I don’t know, Hon. Seems like it gets away from us, though, doesn’t it?”

“Sure does.”

We headed to the galley, and the kids were waiting for us. Rhonda asked, “When did we go into the business of helping out the SWAT teams, Uncle Bob?”

Nikki said, “Sergeant Mitchell from the other day called, and told him there might be kids inside. It was all downhill from there.”

Janet replied, “That would be all it would take. We’re going to be busy, now, aren’t we?”

I said, “Andre is, at least. I hope he has somebody else trained up in the kitchen.”

Nikki said, “I think Andre would be plenty busy, if he was organic.”

Milly asked, “What do you mean, Ma’am?”

“A female firefighter seemed to take a shine to him, this afternoon.”

Janet asked, “Andre has a girlfriend?”

I said, “I don’t know about all that, but she sure seemed to like the way he handled himself.”

Jimmy looked at me, curious. I said, “He and his team came in, squared things away, and didn’t take long to get it done. I thought it was impressive, and I’ve seen them work before.
